Tlingit Tribe
There is a tribe in southeast Alaska called the Tlingit tribe. This tribe has a unique culture that is different from other tribes in the area. Unfortunately, the Tlingit tribe does not have a good past with the United States. In 1869 the United States purchased the territory from Russia. The Tlingit tribe did not react well to this, they felt that their ancestral homeland was not for the Russians to sell. The Tlingit tribe cultures and traditions started to fade as the Russians and the Americans took over their land. Throughout history the Tlingit tribe had had many conflicts with Russia, United States, and Canada. The Tlingit tribe had fought with both Russia and the United States. The Tlingit tribe suffered the most. In Canada, the Tlingit tribe were forced by the government to give up their language and culture because they were residents of Canada and therefor had to obey the laws of the land. Overtime the Tlingit people loss their ways and conformed to the ways of the Canadian people. But now the Tlingit people are allowed to practice their language and their culture. So they are starting to regain their old ways. The tlingit tribe is regaining their culture, even though, it is going to be incredibly difficult because there is few people who know the culture. But the ones who remember are passing it to their children. It is incredible that their culture was suppressed for so long are now starting to regain the traditions that were starting to fade away. The Tlingit tribe will never gain back the full culture and traditions because many of their people have conformed to the canadian lifestyle. It would be surprising to me if the tlingit people would be able to bring their traditions and lifestyle that they had before the russians invaded their land. But if they do it would be a great accomplishment.
